Tectonic plates
Label the main plates of the earth's crust. When you are ready, use the Mark button to see if you are right.
Discussion points
- The rocky surface of the earth floats in a number of pieces on top of a liquid mantle of magma. Each piece is called a 'plate'.
- The plates are moving, very slowly, in different directions. They pull apart in places and crash or grind together in others. These events cause the formation of mountains, earthquakes and volcanoes.
- The great mountain ranges of the earth follow the line of plate edges, e.g. the Andes or the Himalayas. Volcanoes are often situated at the plate edges too.
- Compare the mountain and volcano worksheets in the Related Activities menu and notice how the maps correspond.
