Discussion points
- The Turks Islands and the Caicos Islands together make up the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory. The Turks and Caicos archipelago, together with the Bahamas, is part of the larger Lucayan Archipelago. This is the north eastern part of the West Indies.
- Though sometimes referred to as Caribbean islands, they are not located in the Caribbean Sea, rather they are situated in the west Atlantic Ocean.
- Sea salt production was the main industry of the Turks and Caicos Islands, but today it is tourism.
- Some of the smaller islands, 'cays', are privately owned by the rich and famous.
- Discuss why some of the islands are densely populated and others not. For instance, despite being one of the larger islands, East Caicos has no-one living on it.
- There are extremes of depth in the seas surrounding the islands. The lighter colour is less than 10 meters deep. The darker colour is up to 3km! See how the barrier reef along the northern fringe of the Caicos Islands sits on the edge of the sea shelf. Why might this be? Notice that the cruiser terminus is built on one of the few places where the sea is deep enough for huge ships.
