Discussion points
- Orkney is an archipelago (group of islands) 16km north of the Scottish mainland.
- It consists of about 70 islands.
- Three quarters of the population live on the largest island (which they call The Mainland) where the two largest settlements are. These are Stromness and Kirkwall.
- Orkney (and Shetland too) was controlled by Vikings for a while, first as a pirate base for raids against Norway, then by the kingdom of Norway.
- The climate is relatively mild and the soil fertile. This means that nearly all of the islands' area is farmland.
- Look at the transport connections on the map. Notice that some of the southern isles are connected by bridges. The northern isles are reached by boat or plane.
- What do you notice about the location of the majority of the harbours?
