Tree World
Learn through this simulation game about the carbon cycle and the importance of maintaining a healthy balance of carbon in the atmosphere.
There are three modes to play in: Tutorial (Start here) - a walk-through of the game's mechanics, Pioneer - Play without the hand-holding, Rescue - Attempt to fix a world already in a climate crisis.
This game seeks to demonstrate how nature can support people's comfortable existence if we take care to maintain its life support system, here simplified to the trees.
Use the command buttons in the top left to tell the Beeples what to do. You can change the view with the controls in the top right. Keep an eye on the meters in the bottom right and use the graph button to view detailed statistics on how well your planet is progressing and to get tips.
Discussion points
- In reality, carbon dioxide (CO2) makes up a tiny amount of the atmosphere, but its effect is very powerful. It is not the only greenhouse gas, methane and nitrous oxide from pollution are also significant.
- Take a look at the Cee-oh-too molecules in the game. Observe their motion - how they appear from the animals and the activities of the Beeples and how they get absorbed by the trees. Notice how conditions change on the planet as the quantity of molecules increases.
- See how quickly things can deteriorate if you fell lots of trees and do a lot of burning. Compare this to real life where forests and other carbon absorbers are being destroyed and emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases are high.
- What can be done to avert a climate crisis on planet Earth?
